Asha Sharma and Xbox: The Woman Leading Microsoft’s Toughest Gaming Reset
Asha Sharma took charge of Xbox without a traditional videogame-industry background. Now, the Microsoft executive is leading a sweeping reset of the gaming business, from layoffs and changing investment priorities to a renewed focus on players and profitability.
Microsoft has handed one of its biggest gaming challenges to an executive who had never previously run a videogame business.
Asha Sharma, appointed CEO of Xbox in February 2026, is now overseeing a business that includes the Xbox console platform, Game Pass, major franchises and Microsoft’s global gaming studios. Her appointment came as the division faced slowing growth, pressure on profitability and questions over whether its previous strategy of expanding aggressively across studios, subscriptions and hardware was sustainable. Microsoft officially announced Sharma’s appointment in February, later changing the name of Microsoft Gaming to XBOX.
Her response has been unusually direct: acknowledge the problems, communicate them openly and make difficult decisions quickly.
Who Is Asha Sharma?
Sharma’s career before Xbox was built largely outside gaming.
She previously held senior roles at Meta and Instacart, rising through product and operational leadership positions. At Meta, she worked on products including Messenger and eventually became a vice president. At Instacart, she served as chief operating officer and helped lead the company through the pandemic and its 2023 public listing.
She returned to Microsoft in 2024 to lead an organisation working on AI tools before being asked by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to consider taking over the gaming business.
That made her appointment something of a surprise. Unlike longtime Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Sharma did not come from the traditional videogame leadership pipeline.
Microsoft’s leadership, however, believed her experience running consumer businesses and navigating complex technology organisations could help Xbox tackle its strategic problems.
‘Clarity Is Kindness’: Sharma’s Leadership Philosophy
One phrase has become closely associated with Sharma’s management style:
“Clarity is kindness.”
Rather than attempting to soften difficult news, Sharma has made a point of explaining the problems facing Xbox directly to employees.
In a recent town hall, she argued that companies need to become more comfortable discussing difficult realities instead of only celebrating successes. Her approach has made her a very different public-facing leader from her predecessor.
That philosophy has become especially important during a painful restructuring.
In July, Sharma announced plans to eliminate approximately 3,200 Xbox jobs, representing roughly 20% of the unit’s workforce, while also reducing the number of games being produced and moving four studios outside Xbox’s ownership structure.
The cuts have generated anxiety among employees, but some executives and developers have also praised Sharma for clearly explaining why the changes are happening.
Why Is Microsoft Resetting Xbox?
The problems facing Xbox are not simply about console sales.
Microsoft’s gaming business has expanded dramatically over the past decade, including major acquisitions and investments in content, hardware and subscription services.
But growth has not kept pace with those investments.
Xbox’s revenue declined by 10% in Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter, while content and services revenue also fell 10%. Microsoft has said it is making changes across content,
