Mukesh Ambani Donates ₹151 Crore to ICT Mumbai, His Alma Mater

In a powerful gesture of gratitude and support for education, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and MD of Reliance Industries, has donated a massive ₹151 crore to his alma mater, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai.

Announced earlier this week, the donation marks one of the largest-ever individual contributions to a public academic institution in India.

A Proud Homecoming

Mukesh Ambani, who completed his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from ICT (formerlyUDCT), described the contribution as deeply personal. Speaking on the occasion, Ambani stated:

“My father had a burning desire to contribute to education. This institute shaped my early thinking and gave me the foundation to dream big. Giving back to ICT is an honour.”

How Will the ₹151 Crore Be Used?

According to university officials, the donation will fund:

  • State-of-the-art research labs
  • Scholarship programs for deserving students
  • Expansion of innovation and entrepreneurship hubs
  • Faculty development and international collaborations

The grant also comes at a time when ICT Mumbai is seeing increasing demand for advanced programs in chemical sciences, sustainability, and green energy, aligning closely with Reliance’s own new-age business interests.

ICT Mumbai: A Legacy Institution

Founded in 1933, ICT has produced some of India’s top industrial leaders, including:

  • Mukesh Ambani
  • Raghunath Mashelkar
  • Anji Reddy (Dr. Reddy’s Labs)

It remains one of the top-ranked chemical engineering colleges in the country. The current fee structure for ICT remains affordable, with UG programs averaging ₹85,000 per year and PG programs ranging between ₹1–1.5 lakh annually — making this donation even more impactful in extending access and improving infrastructure.

A Boost for Indian Education

The ₹151 crore donation isn’t just philanthropy — it’s a signal that industry and academia can work together to elevate Indian higher education. Ambani’s gift is expected to inspire other alumni and corporate leaders to invest in India’s knowledge economy.

Final Thought

As Mukesh Ambani continues to build a tech-forward legacy through Reliance, this historic donation reflects a deeper commitment — not just to innovation, but to the very roots where it all began.
