Blind Will Be Able to See with Blindsight: Musk’s Company Neuralink Plans
For the First Time, ‘Blindsight’ Will Be Transplanted in Humans by the End of This Year
American tech giant billionaire Elon Musk’s brain chip startup company ‘Neuralink‘ is planning to perform the first ‘blindsight’ implant in humans by the end of this year.
The goal of this ambitious project is to bring light to the eyes of those who are blind from birth or who have lost both their eyesight and optic nerves. During a town hall event in Wisconsin, Musk revealed that the company hopes to perform the first implant by the end of the year.
He said, ‘Our goal is to enable people who are completely blind to see.’ However, he also admitted that the initial version will have low-resolution vision. But Musk believes that in the future, its technology can enable ‘superhuman’ vision.
How Does ‘Blindsight’ Work?
The Blindsight device consists of a microelectrode array that is embedded in the brain’s visual cortex. The device takes visual data from an external camera and stimulates neurons, allowing users to understand visual information.
Musk said the chip has shown promising results in tests conducted on monkeys. In September last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved the device, paving the way for it to be implanted in humans.
