British Adventurer Karl Bushby Reunites With Mother After Completing 28-Year Global Trek

British adventurer Karl Bushby has finally returned home after completing an extraordinary 28-year journey on foot across the world. The 57-year-old reached his home city of Hull in northern England on Monday, covering approximately 50,000 kilometres (31,000 miles) since setting out on his expedition.

Hundreds of supporters gathered to welcome him as he arrived in the city. The emotional homecoming marked the end of a journey that took him through challenging landscapes, international borders and years of uncertainty.

“After 28 years, you just couldn’t ask for more than this,” Bushby told the cheering crowd. He later added, “I guess I’ll be seeing you around.”

An Emotional Reunion With His Mother

Following the public welcome, Bushby headed to his family home in Sutton Park, where his mother, Angela, was waiting. He was also reunited with his 36-year-old son and 12-year-old granddaughter.

A video shared by Reuters captured the emotional moment between Bushby and his mother. Angela, who had not seen her son in a decade, greeted him with the words, “Where have you been?”

She later expressed her happiness and relief at having him home, telling the media that it was good to have him back.

The reunion brought a deeply personal conclusion to an expedition that had kept Bushby away from home for almost three decades.

From A World Map To A 31,000-Mile Expedition

Bushby’s journey began in his twenties, following the breakdown of his marriage. Inspired by his father’s curiosity about whether it was possible to walk from London to New York, he decided to attempt an ambitious overland expedition.

A former member of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment, Bushby set out with a tent, a few hundred dollars and an inexpensive plastic camera. He began in Chile and travelled north through the Americas, eventually reaching Alaska.

His route took him across some of the world’s most demanding environments. He travelled through jungles in Central America, crossed the frozen stretch between Alaska and Russia, and continued through Mongolia and China before making his way towards Europe.

The expedition also involved crossing major bodies of water. Last month, he completed a swim across the English Channel, one of the final challenges before reaching his destination.

Imprisonment, Border Restrictions And Financial Setbacks

The expedition was initially expected to take approximately 10 years. However, several unexpected obstacles extended the journey to 28 years.

Bushby encountered significant difficulties along the way, including a brief imprisonment in Panama and an incident in Mexico in which he was reportedly held at gunpoint. Russian authorities also detained him for illegally crossing the country’s border.

Financial difficulties added further delays. The global financial crisis of 2008 affected his ability to continue travelling, while the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans again.

Despite these setbacks, Bushby continued working towards his original goal of completing the journey entirely on foot, apart from the necessary crossings involving water.

A Journey That Finally Came Full Circle

What began as an ambitious personal challenge eventually became a decades-long expedition defined by persistence, physical endurance and determination.

Bushby’s return to Hull represents more than the completion of a record-breaking journey. It also marks his reunion with a family that spent years waiting for him to come home.

After travelling across continents, navigating difficult borders and overcoming repeated setbacks, the adventurer has finally reached the place where his journey began to take shape: his childhood home in northern England.
