Khan had reportedly been undergoing treatment in Mumbai and was admitted to Nanavati Hospital after his health deteriorated. Reports said he was in critical condition before his death.

Reports from ETV Bharat and other outlets have described his illness as liver cancer. However, a Hindustan Times report quoting his business partner Shivam said Khan had previously been diagnosed with lung cancer, had recovered, and suffered a relapse shortly before his hospitalisation. The reports therefore differ on the specific type of cancer.
Khan was reportedly admitted to Nanavati Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment before his death.

Khan eventually escaped and later approached the police. The case subsequently became part of an investigation into a group accused of targeting actors and comedians through fake event invitations.
